Luxury is rarely about excess. In high-end hospitality projects, the real challenge lies in selecting the right materials, processing them correctly, and executing every detail with precision.
This philosophy shaped Petros Stone’s work on a 5,000 sq. ft. luxury villa inside a 5-star resort at Velaa Private Island in the Maldives. The project demanded a material palette that felt elegant yet restrained — something that could complement the tropical landscape without overpowering it.

For this reason, Statuario marble became the defining material of the resort. Its soft white base and flowing grey veining introduced a timeless character while maintaining the calm, minimal atmosphere envisioned for the space.
In this case study, we explore how Petros Stone transformed a 5,000 sq. ft. luxury Velaa Private Island in the Maldives. in the Maldives using carefully selected Statuario marble. From quarry-level block selection and resin treatment to precision slab mapping and installation, every stage of the project was executed to achieve a seamless balance between luxury, functionality, and minimalist design.

Design Brief
As the luxurious Velaa Private Island is a part of a 5-star resort, the brief was simple– to keep up with the aesthetics, keeping the functionality uncompromised.
The design intent focused on a minimalist design with a palette to retain character while harmonising with the natural surroundings.
This is how Statuario marble became one of the top picks owing to its bright white tones complementing the tropical greens.

Behind-the-Scenes – The Selection Process
The true character of a project isn’t just defined by its final look. Rather, it begins to take shape right at the material selection phase.
Petros Stone laid the foundation for timelessness through their meticulous material selection process for this luxury resort.
1. Block Shortlisting

Of 200 blocks of the Statuario marble, only three were shortlisted for processing. At Petros Stone, we believe in garbage out, even the slightly incompatible blocks, right at the beginning.
Since the project relied on structural integrity and aesthetics, precise filtration enabled the achievement of the goals. The parameters for shortlisting were as follows:
- Colour consistency throughout the slab.
- Alignment possibility of veins across multiple slabs.
- Absence of fissures, cracks, or any structural weaknesses.
The block-level shortlisting ensured that the yielded slabs would share a cohesive character.
2. Resin Treatment

The selection of blocks was followed by one of the most critical steps– resin treatment. This process ensured that no micro-pores or fissures remained on the surface.
Resin treatment helps minimize the risks of breakage as it strengthens the stone by filling all the gaps.
3. Marble Processing
The resort was planned to retain a sense of continuity amidst its open-plan concept. This is where our stone experts ideated the most suitable slab size– 1000mm x 1700mm.

This sizing minimised the visible joints and facilitated easy handling of the material. The slabs were treated for a honed finish to cut down the glare from the bright white surface. Additionally, a honed finish added more depth to the design while minimising the slippiness of the surface.
4. Packaging and Shipping

As the material had to be exported to the Maldives, each slab was carefully packed to cut down the chances of damage during transit.
5. The Execution Strategy

The execution process at Petros® Stone is guided by precision in every step.
Before our team of skilled experts began the installation, a digital map was developed. Utilising advanced technology for visualisation helped lay each slab in a specific position, continuing the veining direction.
- Mapping helped in aligning veins across the flooring.
- Bookmatched cladding was made easier through visualisation.
- It helped in the identification of slabs for feature designs.
Another defining feature of the project was bookmatched cladding. Our team identified slabs with a veining pattern forming the exact mirror image. This shortlisting approach ensured that the wall resulted in a symmetrical pattern, enhancing the overall look of the room.
Applications Across the Velaa Private Island

Flooring
Flooring is one of the key design elements to define the aesthetics of a room. The large-format slabs crafted open and uninterrupted spaces.
Honed finish for flooring promised to inject a texture to the design, and, at the same time, it ensures that the flooring is functional and safe owing to minimised slipperiness.
Bookmatched Wall Cladding
A bookmatched wall cladding in the living room serves as a focal point. The mirror-like symmetry draws attention and adds an artistic touch to the space.
Vanity Counters
The application of Statuario marble in vanity counters adds sophistication to the overall design.
Kitchen Island
The client wanted a statement-making kitchen design. A statuario marble countertop was installed with uniform thickness to refine the aesthetics.
The slab was treated with protective sealants for longevity.
Table Tops
Other than the conventional applications of marble, this luxurious Velaa Private Island retains a cohesive character through the application of Statuario marble on the table tops.
Final Spatial Experience

This luxury resort is an embodiment of serenity.
The sense of continuity, balance, and harmony is established in the design through mindful application of marble. From flooring to the tabletops, the application of one of the most expensive marbles– Statuario Calacatta elevates the aesthetics of the design, while keeping up with the functionality.
This design is a testament to the role of material in the curation of designs.
